Bending Wood - An Overview.

This course is RIAI CPD Links Approved for 5.5 pts. With completion certificates issued.

Bending Wood is a very important element of woodworking, at all sizes and scales. From Architectural details, stair casing, and boat building, to musical instruments and furniture. Bending wood creates a pleasing aesthetic, provides a physical comfort and in certain circumstances provides additional strength.

This Technique Focused workshop discusses the various options for bending wood and creating curved sections, and will also provide a hands on bending project to demonstrate the plasticity of wood under pressure.

Learning Outcomes.

 Participants will achieve a clear & concise introduction to the advantages &

disadvantages of specific bending techniques and their applications.

 The introductions to the various bending options will assist in both conceptual

design and design specifications.

 Participants will achieve a tactile experience related to the elasticity of wood.

 An appreciation of the critical importance of understanding of wood grain.

Programme as follows;

09.40 - 10.45

Introduction with Power Point Presentation to cover;

Cut Curves v’s Bent Wood curves.

Advantages of bent wood and the various options

Selection of materials, Species & Trees, Wood Grain & Material preparation.

Examples of Furniture & Industry products.

11.15 - 13.00

Demonstration of Laminations on a 1:2 scale spiral stairs form.

Demonstration of Vacuum Forming.

Introduction to the Steam Chamber and Water Bath.

13.00 - 14.00

Lunch - Bring your lunch. (No shops nearby)

14.00 - 16.30

Hands on bending project. This is a Free Form exercise to feel the elasticity of the wood after steaming. This is followed by an open discussion, feedback and wrap-up.

** Please note** This session will provide a physical introduction to wood bending, and the tools and equipment required for successful applications.

Our Technique Focused Workshops are designed to help you develop a deeper understanding of your tools and materials , and to enhance your pleasure and success in working with wood. We aim to provide a Skill Sharing Session with like minded and interested participants.

3 to 6 persons per session.

  • Duration - 6.5 hours. 09.30 - 13.00 / 14.00 - 17.00 (Tea / Coffee & Biscuits provided. Bring your lunch)

  • Total Cost - € 180.00 inc. materials.
