Project Ideas
RATED ‘STOCK’ PROJECTS ARE DESIGNED TO OFFER SPECIFIC LEARNING POINTS.
Keepsake / Jewellery Box with sliding lid
At Beginners level, this project affords a number of important learning points and at the same time offers opportunities for creative interpretation. * Introduction to working with Hardwood. * Abrasive papers and Sanding Techniques. * Measuring & Marking. * Adhesives & Assembly. * Final Sanding & and introduction to Finishing with Shellac & Beeswax. This project includes an introduction to the use of a hand saw, and a block plane. - This is a Beginners project and suitable for all age groups with no previous woodworking experience. It is a super keepsake project and will be completed in a one day session. * This project can also be purchased as a Self Assembly through Gift It Kitz.
Moravian Stool
This design dates back to the early 1700’s and possibly even earlier. A great project to introduce the discerning woodwork enthusiast to some more complex and detailed techniques, all of which are important in most chair designs. The legs are an eight sided taper, and this requires some detailed marking and cutting. The hand plane is an essential tool in the fabrication of the legs, so this element of the project will include maintenance and blade sharpening. The top of the leg is turned to provide an integral dowel that will be used to fix the legs to the seat. The dowel can be turned on the lathe or cut by hand. The legs and seat are co-joined with a sliding dovetail as illustrated. The stool can be further enhanced with the use of inlays (as shown) and used as a small occasional table. This project is more complex and requires more time to cover the numerous new techniques and leaning points. Allow four to five sessions and longer if you wish to apply inlays. (Suggested time durations are are relative and dependent on individual skill sets )
Jewellery Box - Lift off lid.
Another Beginners level box but this time with a lift off lid. This project is more assembly and requires less tools to put together. The component parts fit without any cutting. Some measuring and marking is required. Veneers are provided for the participant to create a personalised presentation. Learning Points: * Introduction to working with Hardwood. * Abrasive papers and Sanding Techniques. * Adhesives and Assembly. * Cutting veneers and understanding the importance of wood grain. * Final sanding and introduction to Finishing with Shellac and Beeswax. This project is also designed to be completed in a one day session, and is suitable for all age groups with no previous woodworking experience.
Occasional Table
The ‘Occasional Table’ will occupy a variety of locations and fulfil a variety of functions. In this case we aim to build on techniques and practises already achieved and build on them as a foundation. This project will introduce Mortice and Tenon joints, and if a drawer is required, the preferred joint used will be dovetails. An integral part of this project is establishing a design and drawing the details. This project design will be guided bearing in mind the skill set of the participant.
